Art Maze of Texas

Vision Statement

The Art Maze of Texas is an immersive labyrinth that celebrates the diverse and dynamic spirit of the state. Visitors step into interconnected 8x8x8 rooms where each wall is transformed by Texas artists into vibrant works ranging from bold graffiti to lifelike landscapes, abstract reflections, and 3D installations. Carefully designed lighting highlights each piece, with some works incorporating light as an active part of the art, creating a dynamic, ever-changing experience.

Unlike traditional mazes—where the brain locks onto turns, pathways, and the structure of the labyrinth—this maze invites visitors to become joyfully distracted. Here, art itself is the compass, guiding explorers not toward an exit but into moments of wonder, curiosity, and surprise without a defined purpose.

Each wall represents a unique contribution by individual artists or groups of artists, ensuring that every turn reveals a fresh perspective and voice. Alongside professional works, the maze also includes pieces created through community participation. Selected artworks will be transformed into paint-by-numbers murals, offering opportunities for everyday people—including those who do not typically engage in artistic endeavors—to leave their mark. Research has shown that non-artist adults who participate in making art experience greater happiness, and with this in mind, we plan to host paint-by-numbers sessions across Texas cities. Seniors in independent and assisted living facilities will be invited to help complete mural panels, as will children through kid-friendly designs, ensuring intergenerational contributions to the maze.

To deepen this spirit of collaboration, the maze will also feature a participatory room where visitors can pick up a brush and add their own strokes to the walls using provided materials. In this way, the Art Maze of Texas becomes more than a gallery—it evolves into a living, breathing creation shaped by both artists and the community, a collective celebration of the multitude of voices, stories, and creative expressions that define Texas.

This project was envisioned as a continuation of the Whirl of Art project. When that installation was burned at Burning Man 2025, we preserved a few of its most striking wall panels to weave them into the Art Maze of Texas. We think of them as the spark, the kindling for the fire of this new collaborative project we are excited to begin.

If you are interested in contribiting a full 8x8 wall or an 8x8 wall with an archway or door, please reach out and let's see how your vision can be added to the Maze.
